About this Event
Media is a powerful tool which can change embedded norms which perpetuate gender inequality by reinforcing gender prejudices. It can, however, be the force which can provide girls and women with role models that inspire them to break with societal norms and have different choices. Media has the power to teach, inspire, connect and disrupt.
Giving Women has invited a panel of experts from philanthropic foundations, NGOs and representatives from media companies to talk about the underrepresentation of women in media and the need for powerful role models. The panellists will talk about how their organizations address gender inequality through media, speak about the impact of their programs, and also highlight successful media initiatives that are helping to disrupt these norms for the most vulnerable communities of women.
Our panellists will be:
• Heidi Basch-Harod, Executive Director at Women’s Voices Now, USA
• Sharon Bylenga, Founder of Media Matters for Women, Sierra Leone, Congo
• Rana Askoul, Chief Executive Officer of Womanity Foundation, Switzerland
• Suba Umathevan, CEO Plan International, Switzerland
The Panel will be moderated by Katharina Samara-Wickrama, Director of Issues Affecting Women Programme (IAWP) at Oak Foundation.
