SUMMARY:Giving Women Conference: Women at the Frontline of Climate Action and Innovation
DESCRIPTION:Join Giving Women on October 3rd\, as the women most affected by the climate crisis and environmental devastation lead the conversation and the action towards a sustainable future. Climate change disproportionately impacts women in underserved communities: droughts\, floods\, and desertification threaten their livelihoods\, food security\, access to water\, and forced migration. Many of them hold solutions rooted in tradition and community\, yet their voices are often absent from the climate conversations. In its 11th annual conference\, Giving Women will rewrite the narrative on climate change. Engage in a powerful dialogue with women on the frontlines\, NGOs\, activists\, and leaders as we uncover existing solutions and chart a path forward for a more sustainable future. \nWe’re bringing together a powerful force for change:\n-Women leading the fight: Hear directly from those on the frontlines\, finding solutions every day.\n-World-renowned experts: Learn from leading minds in climate action and discover existing solutions that work.\n-Action-oriented collaboration: Reflect\, strategise and identify gaps with all stakeholders – NGOs\, UN agencies\, philanthropists\, private sector leaders\, and foundations.\nTogether\, we will: \n-Shine a light on successful solutions ready for replication.\n-Bridge the gap between existing initiatives and new needs.\n-Chart a path forward to a more sustainable future.

SUMMARY:Fundraising across borders
DESCRIPTION:Register below\nFundraising from other countries can be hugely beneficial as it opens up a larger network of potential donors and supporters. It can also be a trap for the unwary and unprepared as it can use up time and funds which could better be placed in elevating local fundraising. \nThis workshop will help you evaluate whether fundraising abroad is viable for your organisation\, what type of international fundraising you should contemplate\, where you should look for funding\, what steps are you need to take to make it happen and how to avoid costly mistakes. We will also look at some of the practical issues you will face such as tax and legal requirements and benefits to you and to donors; whether you need a separate legal entity abroad or whether an intermediary will work for you; and whether you need someone on the ground in the target country/ies. \nOur facilitator \nNancy Bikson is the Managing Director of Chapel & York. She is a lawyer with over 40 years’\nexperience providing advice to private clients and charities worldwide. She has lived in the United\nKingdom\, United States\, Australia and France and has worked with and for organisations across the\nworld in both legal and fundraising capacities\, specialising in cross-border work. She has a BA in\nLate Mediaeval English History\, a Juris Doctor degree and a LLM (Master of Laws Degree\, Tax). She\nis a member of the Richard III Society and lives in a house built in 1557.

SUMMARY:Decolonising Philanthropy - Adjusting the Balance of Power for Good
DESCRIPTION:In recent years\, there has been a growing recognition of the need to challenge the colonial underpinnings of philanthropic practices and shift power dynamics towards those directly impacted by funding decisions. This imperative undertaking of decolonizing development\, grant-making\, and philanthropy is an ambitious task\, and one that requires a great deal of sectoral reflection\, awareness and willingness to effect change by listening to the needs and realities of the beneficiaries. \nDecolonizing philanthropy entails reevaluating where decision-making power resides and ensuring that those who have benefited less from historical wealth creation are given agency/power to shape the programs and initiatives that affect them. It requires acknowledging and respecting the cultural realities and contexts within which these partnerships operate\, moving away from top-down approaches that prioritize funder perspectives. As we seek to repair the damages of wealth creation and forge a more equitable path forward\, it is crucial to learn from the experiences of both philanthropists and implementers in navigating and rebalancing power dynamics. \nThis panel hosted by Giving Women will bring together funders\, local implementing partners and advisors\, to unpack tangible examples and best practices around how we can all work together\, to take actionable steps to make progress. This includes reflecting on what has worked well\, as well as acknowledging failures and areas for improvement. \nTakhani Bonnet\, Giving Women member and independent consultant for private sector philanthropy and sustainable investing will moderate the conversation with: \nAlishia Fernandez Miranda: Founder and Chair\, I. G. Advisors\nDr. Abiodun Adereni: Founder & CEO\, HelpMum Africa\nGAURI MAHENDRA\, CO-founder\, UMEED\nSusan Snider: Vice President of Strategy\, Innovation and Impact\, Equality Fund \nBIOS\nTakhani Bonnet \nGiving Women member and independent consultant for private sector philanthropy and sustainable investing; most recently\, with the United Nations\, Edmond de Rothchild Banque Privee and the Blackstone Charitable Foundation. \nAlisha Fernandez Miranda \nAlisha has dedicated her career to fixing the resource flow to make social impact a more inclusive\, efficient space. She serves as Chair and former CEO of I.G. Advisors\, an award-winning global strategy consultancy specialising in social and environmental change\, advising the world’s biggest nonprofits\, foundations\, and corporations on their philanthropy and social initiatives. \nA graduate of Harvard University and the London School of Economics\, her first book\, My What If Year was released in 2023.
